Compounds of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, each represents hydrogen or an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, acyl or aroyl groups, may be obtained by treating 4,5-dihydroxy-imidazolidin-2-one or 4,5-dihydroxy - 2 - nitrimino - imidazolidine or a 4,5-diether or a 4,5-diester of either of these compounds with a nitrating agent. The reaction may be effected at atmospheric pressure at - 10‹ C. to + 20‹ C., suitable nitrating agents being nitric acid or a mixture of nitric acid/acetic anhydride. Specific examples of the radicals R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen and methyl, ethyl and acetyl radicals.
