[Also in Divisions A5 and C5] 2,3-Xylenol is prepared by heating 2,3-dimethyl - 5 - tertiary - alkyl phenol in the presence of sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrofluoric acid, aluminium trichloride, zinc dichloride, stannic chloride, titanium tetrachloride or boron trifluoride. The 2,3-dimethyl- 5-tertiary alkyl phenol used as starting material may be obtained from o-xylene by (a) treating o-xylene with a tertiary olefin, a tertiary-alkyl halide or a tertiary-alkyl alcohol in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to form 3,4-dimethyl-tertiary alkyl benzene; (b) treating this with concentrated sulphuric acid to give 2,3 - dimethyl - 5 - tertiary - alkyl benzene sulphonic acid; (c) fusing this sulphonic acid with potassium hydroxide and/or sodium hydroxide to form 2,3-dimethyl-5-tertiary alkyl phenol.
