Novel compounds of the formulµ wherein R and R 3 are each an alkyl radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms; R 2 is an alkyl radical containing from 1-6 carbon atoms or a hydrogen atom; and Y is a bisalkoxymethylene radical wherein the alkoxy portion of the radical contains from 1-6 carbon atoms, or an alkylenedioxy methylene radical wherein the alkylene portion of the radical contains from 2-4 carbon atoms; or an ammonium salt of a compound of the above formula wherein R 2 is an alkyl radical containing from 1-6 carbon atoms or a hydrogen atom are obtained in a process wherein (a) a compound of the general formula in which R, R 3 and Y are as defined above, R 1 is an alkyl radical containing from 1-6 carbon atoms or an alkanoyl radical containing from 2-7 carbon atoms, and the dotted line indicates the presence of either an 8(9) or a 9(11)-double bond; is dehydrated with a catalytic amount of a strong organic or inorganic acid; and (b) partially reducing the so-obtained product by reaction with molecular hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. |
