[Also in Division C3] A 1,3 - or 1,4 - bis(2<SP>1</SP> - phenyl-3<SP>1</SP> - isoxazo lidinyl)-benzene of the formula wherein either (a) R 1 = H or carbalkoxy, P 2 = H, alkyl or carbalkoxy, R 3 = carbaalkoxy amide, hydroxy alkyl, alkoxy, acid halide or aryl; or (b) R 1 and R 2 together represent -CO-O-CO-CO-N(C 6 H 5 )-CO -CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 - or R 3 = hydrogen, and preparation thereof by heating the appropriate α,α<SP>1</SP>(phenylene)-bis(N- phenylnitrone) with a monoethylenically unsaturated compound optionally in the presence of a suitable solvent. Suitable monoethylenically unsaturated compounds are vinyl compounds, e.g. methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, allyl alcohol, vinyl butyl ether, vinyl acetate, acrylic acid chloride and styrene; unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, e.g. dimethyl fumarate, maleic anhydride and N-phenylmaleimide; unsaturated alicyclic compounds, e.g. cyclohexene; and unsaturated alicyclic compounds, e.g. fused ring compounds, e.g. indene. In particular 1,4 - bis(2<SP>1</SP> - phenyl - 5<SP>1</SP> - methyl - 51- methoxycarbonyl - 31 - isoxazolidinyl)benzene and 3,3<SP>1</SP> - (p - phenylene) - bis - (2 - phenylisoxazolidine - 4,5 - dicarboxyphenylimide) are prepared by reacting α,α-(p-phenylene)-bis-(N- phenylnitrone) with methyl-methacrylate and N-phenyl-maleimide respectively.
