[Also in Division G2] Cyclohexane diones of the formula wherein R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are H, alkyl, aryl (substituted or unsubstituted), cyano or carbalkoxy and R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are H, alkyl or aryl (substituted or unsubstituted) are prepared by the condensation of α.#-unsaturated ketones with malonic acid esters, cyano acetic acid esters or aryl acetic acid esters, carbalkoxy groups being removed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation. A specific compound prepared is 5,5-dimethyl cyclohexane-1,3 dione.
