titleOfInvention Preparation of plutonium oxide sol
abstract 1,129,497. Plutonium oxide; nuclear fuel. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 1 Sept., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 39182/66. Headings G6C and G6R. A plutonium oxide sol is prepared by mixing a strong base with a nitric acid solution of tetravalent plutonium to precipitate hydrous plutonium oxide, washing the precipitate, dispersing it in nitric acid, heating with agitation at 60‹-80‹ C. to form a first sol, evaporating to dryness and heating at below 200‹ C. to reduce the residual nitrate content to 0À4-1À0 mole per mole of plutonium, and dispersing the resulting solid in water. The sol may be dried in shallow trays to form gel fragments which are fired at 1100‹- 1150‹ C. to dense oxide particles suitable for vibratory compaction into nuclear fuel elements. Alternatively, the sol may be passed as droplets into a column containing an organic solvent, e.g. 2-octanol mixed with 2-ethyl-1- hexanol or 2.methyl-1.pentanol, which dehydrates the droplets to yield gel microspheres which are dried and calcined. Urania or thoria sol may be added to the PuO 2 sol to produce mixed oxide fuels.
