titleOfInvention | Polyamides |
abstract | 1,129,466. Aromatic polyamides. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 17 Feb., 1966 [17 Feb., 1965], No. 6950/66. Heading C3R. The invention comprises linear polyamides having recurring units of formula in at least 60% of which R is a radical derived by removing the carboxyl groups from naphthalene-1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6-, 1,7-, 2,6- or 2,7- dicarboxylic acid and in at least 60% of which A is a radical derived by removing the terminal amino groups from a diamine of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is a C 4-8 linear alkylene radical, R<SP>2</SP> is H, Me or Et, R 3 is Me or Et and n=1 or 2. They may be prepared by polycondensing the corresponding dicarboxylic acids and diamines. The dicarboxylic acid may, however, be replaced by chloride or by a lower alkyl or phenyl ester. Diamines specified include 2,2- dimethylpentane - 1,5 - diamine, 2,5 - dimethylhexamethylene diamine, 3-methylheptamethylene diamine, 4-methyloctamethylene diamine, 2 - methylbutane - 1,4 - diamine, 2 - methylpentamethylene diamine, 3-ethyl-hexamethylene diamine, 2 - methylhexane - 1,6 - diamine and 2,2,4 - and 2,4,4 - trimethylhexane - 1,6 - diamine. Other dicarboxylic acids and diamines which may be present include isophthalic acid and aliphatic linear and cycloaliphatic diamines, e.g. 1,4-bis (aminomethyl) cyclohexane. The reaction may be carried out initially in the presence of water or aqueous ethanol to form the acid/amine salt and then under an inert atmosphere of reduced pressure. Where the m.p. of the product is above 280‹ C. the salt may be partially polymerized, the intermediate product allowed to set and ground up and the particles heated below their cohesion temperature to complete polymerization. The products may be made into films and fibres. |
