A developable photographic silver halide material is developed by a photographic silver halide developing agent in the presence of a compound of the formula: - wherein either n is 0, A is -CH 2 - and B is -S-; or n is 1, A is -0- or -S-, B is CH and X and Y are each hydrogen or hydroxy or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkoxy, aryl or aryloxy. The compound may be present in a gelatino silver halide emulsion or other layer of the photographic material, in the developer or in a bath with which the exposed photographic material is treated before development. Colour couplers may be present in the silver halide material or in the developer.
