titleOfInvention Fire retardant polyolefin composition
abstract 1,126,478. Polyolefin films and filaments. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 14 April, 1966 [16 April, 1965], No. 16425/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Flame-resistant filaments and films may be prepared from compositions comprising a polyolefin having uniformly dispersed therein 1 to 12% of an organic bromine compound and 0À05 to 20% of a dispersant for said organic bromine compound, based on the weight of the composition, optionally together with 0À1 to 3 weight per cent of pigments and 0-1 to 9 weight per cent of heat and light stabilizers and antioxidants. Filaments may be prepared by extrusion, and films by casting or moulding, particularly by pressing chopped filaments. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polybutene-1 and particularly polypropylene. The preferred bromine compound is tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate. Specified dispersants are chlorinated polyphenyls, chlorinated naphthalene, stearic acid, chlorendic anhydride and waxes. Examples describe the extrusion of compositions comprising polypropylene, tris- (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate together with a dispersant selected from chlorinated polyphenyls, chlorendic anhydride and stearic acid, optionally together with black pigment, p-octylphenyl salicylate, dilauryl thiodipropionate and 2,6 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - methylphenol, through (VI) a 0À045 inch die at 400‹ F. at a rate of 33À5 feet per minute, the resulting filaments being quenched in water and oriented with a draw ratio of 6 : 1 at 300‹ F. under infrared heating; (XII) a 6 inch slit die at 400‹ F., the resulting film being quenched on a watercooled chrome-plated roll; and (XIII) a 0À045 inch die at 400‹ F., the resulting filaments being chopped into half-inch lengths which are pressed between polytetrafluoroethylene coated fibreglass release fabrics between the platens of a press at 370-380‹ F. to produce 8 and 28 mil. films.
