1,126,025. Modified polymeric polyols and polyurethanes produced therefrom. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Oct., 1966 [11 Oct., 1965], No. 42983/65. Headings C3C and C3G. Modified polymeric polyols are obtained by polymerizing, under substantially anhydrous conditions, a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a free radical polymerization catalyst and a polymeric polyol containing at least 0À7 ethylenically unsaturated groups per molecule. The polymeric polyol may be a polyester, polyesteramide, polyether, polythioether or polyacetal. The ethylenically unsaturated groups may be introduced into the polymeric polyol either by including a suitable ethylenically unsaturated compound in the polymer-forming reaction mixture or by reacting a pre-formed hydroxylated polymer with an unsaturated epoxide. A list of suitable ethylenically unsaturated monomers is provided with styrene or a substituted styrene being preferred. Conventional freeradical catalysts are used. The modified polymeric polyols may be reacted with organic polyisocyanates to produce polyurethanes in the presence or absence of a gas-generating agent, e.g. water or an inert liquid of low boiling point. The example describes the reaction of allylglycidyl ether and oxypropylated glycerol in the presence of BF 3 in diethyl ether, followed by the polymerization of styrene on to the so-formed polymeric polyol in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. The modified polymeric polyol is then reacted with tolylene diisocyanate in the presence of stannous octanoate, triethylene diamine, water and a siloxane/oxyalkylene block copolymer to produce a foamed polyurethane. |
