titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to phenolic resin composition |
abstract | Phenolic (novolak) resins may be hardened using a methylene-aniline salt of an oxyacid of boron or phosphorus in amount up to 350 p.b.w. per 100 of resin. Salts of orthoboric or orthophosphoric acid are preferred, but others, e.g. those of orthophosphorous acid, metaboric acid, metaphosphoric acid and metaphosphorous acid are suitable; they may be obtained by reaction of formaldehyde with the aniline salt of the oxyacid. Resins derived from hydroxybenzene are preferred, but those from cresols, xylols or cashew nut shell oil, for instance, may be used. Novolaks, e.g. of phenol:formaldehyde ratio of 1.06:0.74 are preferred. Friction elements for brakes may be prepared by curing mixtures of 15-30 wt. per cent of the resin-hardener mixture of the invention with 70-85 wt. per cent of filler, containing asbestos fibres amounting at least to 30 wt. per cent of the element. Other fillers which may be present include barytes, MgO, brass, zinc and rottenstone powder. The hardener normally exceeds 30 p.b.w. per 100 of resin, and is preferably 100-200 p.b.w. per 100 of resin when the mixture is used in friction elements. |
