titleOfInvention Graft copolymers, their production, and compositions containing them
abstract A graft copolymer comprises main chains of an ethylene polymer of density at least 0.940 g/c.c. containing at least 90% by weight ethylene, to which are grafted side chains derived from a maleic acid diester, the diester being present in the graft copolymer in amount 0.5 to 12% by weight. The graft copolymer may be prepared by heating together the ethylene polymer, diester and a hydroperoxide having a half life of at least one minute at 145 DEG C., e.g. t-butyl hydroperoxide, p-menthane hydroperoxide, pinane hydroperoxide or cumene hydroperoxide, at a temperature above the m.p. of the ethylene polymer. The graft copolymers may be mixed, preferably after softening, with an inert, solid particulate material. In the examples graft copolymers of ethylene butene-1 copolymers grafted with (1) and (4) di-n-butyl maleate, (5) and (10) diethyl maleate, (6) dicyclohexyl maleate, (7) dioctadecyl maleate, (8) diisobutyl maleate and (9) p-chlorophenyl methyl maleate are produced using t-butyl hydroperoxide as catalyst and in Examples 2 and 3 an ethylene homopolymer is similarly grafted with (2) di-n-butyl maleate and (3) diethyl maleate. The graft copolymer of Example 10 is mixed with TiO2 and that of Example 1 is mixed with (16) carbon black, (17) to (21) antimony oxide and chlorinated paraffin wax, (22) and (23) antimony oxide, ammonium fluoborate and distearyl thiodipropionate, (24) antimony oxide and zinc tetramine fluoborate and (25) antimony oxide and nickel hexamine fluoborate. Stabilizers for the chlorinated wax e.g. pentaery-thritol-thiobis-(phenols) may be also incorporated.
