titleOfInvention Process for the polymerization of episulphides
abstract Episulphides are polymerized by contacting them with a catalyst comprising a compound of a metal of Group II of the Mendeleef Periodic Table in an inert liquid medium and in the presence of an anionic or non-ionic emulsifying agent, and agitating the mixture. The catalyst may be employed in conjunction with a cocatalyst, e.g. ammonia, an inorganic ammonium compound, an organic amine, hydrazine or a derivative of hydrazine, or with a chain transfer agent, e.g. ethanediol or mercaptoethanol. The polymerization may be effected at a temperature of 0 DEG C. to the boiling point of the reaction medium, and the catalyst and co-catalyst can be added prior to the addition of the episulphide or mixed in situ in the presence of the episulphides. Specified episulphides are alkylene episulphides, e.g. ethylene, propylene and butylene episulphides, alicyclic episulphides, e.g. cyclohexene episulphides, unsaturated episulphides, e.g. allyl thioglycidyl ether, butadiene monoepisulphide and 1,5-hexadiene monoepisulphide, aromatic episulphides, e.g. styrene episulphide, and episulphides containing more than one episulphide group, e.g. 1,5-hexanediene diepisulphide, and derivatives of episulphides, e.g. halogen-substituted episulphides may be used. Preferred catalysts are zinc and cadmium carbonates and the alkyls, sulphides, halides and oxides of zinc, cadmium and mercury. Specified co-catalysts are ammonium hydroxide, sulphide and carbonate, primary aliphatic amines such as methylamine, ethylamine and allylamine, diamines such as ethylene, propylene and 1,6-hexane diamines, and phenylhydrazine. Specified non-ionic emulsifying agents are polyvinyl alcohol, polyether glycols, esters and ethoxylated polyethers and specified anionic emulsifying agents are the salts of the metals of Group Ia of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table with sulphonated alkyl, aryl, aralkyl compounds and sulphoacetate compounds. Specified inert solvents are aliphatic organic alcohols and esters, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide and water. Stabilizers, e.g. colloids such as blood serum, glue, shellac, alginates, starch, methyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol or casein, and preservatives e.g. phenyl mercuric acetate, sodium betachlorophenate, may be added to the products.
