abstract | N-substituted ammonium allyl and methallyl sulphonates are prepared by reacting an allyl- or methallyl-halide with a metal sulphite to yield a mixture of a metal alkenyl sulphonate and a metal halide which is treated with an aqueous solution of an amine hydrochloride at pH 1-8. The amine hydrochloride may be provided in a solid form, in aqueous solution or it may be formed in situ from equivalent amounts of conc. HCl and the amine. The preferred amines are C2- 7 primary-, C2- 8 secondary - and C3- 14 tertiary amines or an amine which contains the N atom as a hetero atom in a ring system. In the examples allyl chloride and sodium sulphite yield sodium allyl sulphonate and NaCl and the reaction product is then treated with (1) and (2) n-butylamine hydrochloride and (3) dimethylamine hydrochloride. |
