titleOfInvention Acrylic esters
abstract Esters of acrylic acids are prepared by the oxidation of the corresponding aldehydes by forming a complex of a mercuric salt and acrolein or alkyl-substituted acroleins without applying heat, then heating the complex in contact with a mixture of an aliphatic alcohol (1-5 C) a proportion of water less than 15% by weight of the alcohol, and a mercuric salt. The complex ma or may not be separated from the system and an inert organic solvent such as perchloro-ethylene, tetrachloroethane and chloroform may be present. By-products from acrolein are b -methoxypropionaldehyde and b -methoxymethyl propionate and from methacrolein, b -methoxyisobutyraldehyde and b -methoxymethyl isobutyrate.
