titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to polyolefin compositions |
abstract | Fire retardant compositions comprise a polyolefin and at least one compound .(I).Ar(Br)m(ClnR, .(II).Ar(Br)y(Cl)nOH or .(III).Ar(Br)x(Cl)pOR1 where Ar is a carbocyclic aromatic residue; R is a hydrocarbon group, optionally halogenated, or where Ar is a naphthalene residue may be hydrogen; R1 is a hydrocarbon group, optionally halogenated; m is 2 to 4 when R is hydrogen, otherwise 2 to 6; n is 0, 1 or 2; p is 1 or 2; y is 2 or more and x is 1 or 2; compounds I and II containing at least two nuclear bromine atoms and compounds III only two nuclear bromine atoms per molecule. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene and non-expanded polystyrene. The compositions may also contain oxides and sulphides of arsenic, antimony and bismuth, organic antimonates, and conventional pigments, fillers, plasticizers and stabilizers. Specified aromatic halogen compounds are pentabromophenol, tribromophenol, tribromotoluene, pentabromotoluene, chlorodibromotoluene, chlorodibromophenyl allyl ether, dibromonaphthalene and 2,4- dibromo - 1 - methyl naphthalene. Examples describe compositions comprising polyethylene and (2) tribromophenol together with (1) antimony oxide, and (4) pentabromophenol together with (3) antimony oxide; and polypropylene and antimony oxide together with (5) pentabromotoluene, (6) pentabromophenol and (7) tribromophenol. |
