titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of carbocyclic peroxycarboxylic acids
abstract A carbocyclic peroxycarboxylic acid in which for the or each peroxycarboxy group on the carbocyclic ring there is present on an adjacent carbon atom in the carbocyclic ring a carboxy group, said carboxy group being associated with not more than one peroxycarboxy group is prepared by reacting the anhydride of the polycarboxylic acid corresponding to the desired peroxycarboxylic acid with a peroxidizing compound in an organic medium in the presence of a basic compound catalyst, the organic medium being a non-oxidizable medium in which the peroxycarboxylic acid is insoluble, acidifying the reaction mixture on completion of the peroxidation reaction and separating the peroxycarboxylic acid formed from the organic medium. Several halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons are specified for use as organic media. Water and residual peroxidizing compound may be removed azeotropically on completion of the reaction. Examples describe the preparation of monoperphthalic acid.
