titleOfInvention | Crimped tow |
abstract | Cigarette filter tips comprise crimped tow produced by forming a band of filaments, applying to the band a lubricant which comprises an aqueous emulsion of at least one fatty acid ester of a polyalkylene glycol and applying a crimp to the filaments either before or after the application of the lubricant. The tow may consist of continuous cellulose acetate filaments of denier not substantially greater than 16 denier/filament, the total denier of the tow being not substantially greater than 150,000. The aqueous emulsion may contain 1-12% by weight of the ester which may be the monoester of polyethylene glycol with a higher fatty acid, e.g. stearic or oleic acids, or a mixture thereof. The emulsion may be applied to the filaments by immersing them in a trough containing the emulsion and the crimp may be applied by passing them through a stuffing box crimper. Not less than 7 crimps/inch are preferably applied.ALSO:Crimped tow is produced by forming a band of filaments, applying to the band a lubricant which comprises an aqueous emulsion of at least one fatty acid ester of a polyalkylene glycol and applying a crimp to the filaments either before or after the application of the lubricant. The tow may be of the kind used in the production of a cigarette filter tips and may consist of continuous cellulose acetate filaments of denier not substantially greater than 16 denier/filament, the total denier of the tow being not substantially greater than 150,000.
