titleOfInvention Apparatus for melting oxides
abstract 1,120,329. Melting oxides by passing current therethrough. NUKEM NUKLEAR-CHEMIE UND-METALLURGIE G.m.b.H. 20 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 18181/67. Heading H5H. A crucible for melting uranium dioxide and/or plutonium dioxide, by direct passage of current through the oxide powder, has an inner wall 4 of an electrically non-conductive ceramic material, e.g. 60% aluminium oxide and 40% silicon carbide. The space between the outer steel jacket 6 and the ceramic cylinder is filled with a ceramic granulate 7. The oxide powder is preheated by a graphite element 8, which is removed from the melting zone after preheating. The apparatus comprises a watercooled housing 1, a water-cooled upper electrode 2 and a graphite electrode 3 which acts as a conductor, being attached to a copper plate. The crucible has a base plate of graphite resting on a water-cooled lower electrode 5.
