abstract In a normally continuous process for nitrating aromatic hydrocarbons in a series of reactors terminated by a separator, when it is necessary to temporarily stop the influx of reactants and the efflux of final product, the separated waste acid is recycled until the secondary nitration reaction is completed, whereupon the continuous process is resumed. The process may be applied to the production of nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, trinitrotoluene or nitrochlorobenzene.
