titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of polyphenylene ethers
abstract Poly - (2,6 - disubstituted phenylene - 1,4)-ethers are obtained by oxidizing a monophenol substituted in the two ortho positions by alkyl, aryl or alkoxy groups and having a hydrogen in the para position, the oxidizing agent being lead dioxide used in an amount of at least 1 mol. per mol. of the phenol. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent in which both monomer and polymer are soluble, and a compound having a free electron pair, e.g. an amine or a dialkylsulphoxide, may be present. In examples, polymers are prepared by oxidizing 2,6-dimethylphenol, 2,6-diethylphenol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and 2,6-diphenylphenol with lead dioxide in benzene, toluene, chloroform and o-dichloro-benzene; other materials present are triethylamine, acetic acid, paratoluenesulphonic acid, perchloric acid, tetramethylguanidine, magnesium sulphate, pyridine and dimethylsulphoxide.
