titleOfInvention Vinyl acetate copolymer products and process of marking same
abstract A latex having a solids content of at least 45% of a copolymer of 5-40% ethylene and vinyl acetate is produced by polymerizing vinyl acetate in an aq. emulsion at 0-80 DEG C. in the presence of an emulsifying agent and a polymerization catalyst while maintaining a continuous atmosphere of ethylene in the polymerization zone, the polymerization being initated after the aq. emulsion has been brought to equilibrium with respect to dissolved ethylene at a pressure of 10-100 atm. The catalyst may be sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and potassium persulphate or ferrous sulphate. The aq. emulsion may be maintained at a pH of 2-6 using ammonium or sodium bicarbonate or disodium phosphate. The latex may be of average particle size 0.1-2.0m and may be maintained in emulsified form using a polyoxyethylene nonylphenyl ether, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium vinyl sulphonate, polyoxypropylene, a polyoxyethylene/polyoxypropylene glycol, a hydroxyethyl cellulose or an ethylene oxide/tetramethyl decynediol adduct. The copolymer may also contain a third monomer, e.g. maleic acid, or a cross-linking agent, e.g. triallyl cyanurate, glycidyl acrylate, allyl glycidyl ether or N-methylol acrylamide. The vinyl acetate may be formed in situ using acetic acid in the aq. phase. The latex may be formed into a paint by compounding with hydroxy ethyl cellulose, nonyl phenoxy polyoxyethylene ethanol, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and silicate, phenyl mercuric acetate, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate and water.
