| abstract | Organic polymers contain as stabilizer a silicon compound of the formula <FORM:1117378/C3/1> in which R1 and R2 each represent an aromatic group having a carbonyl group (e.g. ketone or ester) in the ortho position and R3 and R4 each represent alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy or an aromatic group having a carbonyl group in the ortho position; R1 and R2 or R3 and R4, when the defined aromatic groups, may be interconnected via the carbonyl group. The aromatic groups may contain alkoxy, aryloxy, halogen or cyano groups. Specified polymers are ethyl cellulose, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polytrifluorochloroethylene, polyesters, polystyrene, polymethacrylates, polyphenylene oxide, cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyolefins and polybutadiene. Other stabilizers and plasticizers may be present. Examples disclose the following compositions: (1) unsaturated polyester and tetra-(2-oxy-4-methoxybenzophenone) -silane; (2) P.V.C., dioctyl phthalate, soya bean oil, paraffin oil and dimethyl - di - (phenoxycarbonyl - 2 - phenoxy) silane; (3) P.V.C., di-n-butyl-di-(isooctylmercaptothioglycolate) tin and dimethyl-(2,21-dioxy - 4 - methoxy - benzophenone) silane; (4) as in (2) except the soya bean oil is epoxidized and there is added the tin complex used in (3); and (5) ethyl cellulose, dammar, toluene and dimethyl - di - (2 - oxy - benzophenone) silane. |
