abstract | A method of treating paper money or the like comprises applying to a surface of the paper, a treating material of a vaporizable character having a distinctive odour not noticeable where circulation of air is relatively free, but capable when confined in a relatively restricted space with a paucity of air, of imparting the odour to the paper and to adjacent articles on the person of an unauthorised handler of the paper. The material used may be diacetyl, ethyl mercaptan tertiary butyl mercaptan, diethyl sulphide, actyl aldehyde, or diphenyl oxide to any of which may be added a mineral oil. The material may be confined in a frangible container attached to some of the paper. The paper may also be treated additionally with a material such as anthracene for producing stains on skin or clothing, the stains visible under ultra-violet light or with a material such as silver nitrate in which the stains are visible to the naked eye. |
