titleOfInvention Benzoxazole derivatives and their use as optical brighteners
abstract Novel benzoxazole derivatives of the general formula <FORM:1116635/C2/1> where n represents 1 or 2 and wherein the condensed hydroaromatic rings may be in 5,6-or 6,7-position, are prepared by reacting 6-amino-indanol-(5), 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3-amino-naphthol-(2) or 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-amino-naphthol-(1) with an acid chloride of 2-, 3-, or 4-cyanocinnamic acid and heating the N-acyl compound thus obtained in an atmosphere of inert gas to temperatures up to 150 DEG to 300 DEG C. They are also prepared by heating the above mentioned cyanocinnamic acids and amino compounds in an inert organic solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst. Compounds having the cyano group in the 4-position are of particular interest. The compounds are used as optical brighteners.ALSO:Textile materials are optically brightened by treating them with a compound of the general formula <FORM:1116635/D1-D2/1> where n represents 1 or 2 and the condensed hydroaromatic rings may be in 5,6- or 6,7- position. The compounds are particularly effective for treating synthetic textile materials, e.g. those made of, or containing, a polyester, polyamide or acetylated cellulose. The brighteners are used as solutions in water or organic solvents, or as dipersions in which dispersing agents may be present. From 0.001 to 1.0% of brightener, based on the weight of goods, is preferably used, and the compounds may be used in combination with chemical bleaching agents or commercial detergents.
