titleOfInvention | Process for the controlled increase in the molecular weight of unsaturated hydrocarbon polymers |
abstract | A process for the controlled increase in molecular weight of unsaturated hydrocarbon polymers prepared by polymerization of conjugated diolefins (alone or with other conjugated diolefins or with monolefins) in inert organic solvents with mixed catalysts of (a) compounds of elements of groups IV and V (of the Mendeleef Periodic system) and (b) hydrides, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl compounds of metals or metal halides of Groups II and III, wherein 0.002 to 2 moles per mole of catalyst component (b) of a compound containing an active hydrogen is added to the reaction mixture after the polymerization is over or after achieving the desire degree of conversion prior to decomposition of the catalyst. Active hydrogen compounds mentioned are water, alcohols, mercaptans, inorganic and organic acids, phenols, thiophenols, enols, imides, polymers, nitromethane and a hydroperoxide. In the examples, butadiene-1,3 and isoprene are homopolymerized, using titanium tetrachloride and aluminium trialkyls as catalyst and the molecular weight controlled by addition of acetic acid, water, phenol, benzyl alcohol, cumene hydroperoxide, nitromethane, ethanol and thiophenol. |
