titleOfInvention | Titanium dioxide pigment and production thereof |
abstract | An Al2O3-containing TiO2 pigment which contains 0.1 to 10% by weight of Al2O3, based on the TiO2 content of the pigment, and has been formed by co-oxidation of TiCl4 and AlCl3, is coated with a porous coating of from 1-25% by weight of SiO2, based on the TiO2 content of the pigment. To coat the pigment an aqueous solution of a water-soluble silicate e.g. sodium silicate is added with agitation to an aqueous slurry maintained at a temperature of 40-70 DEG C. and containing 20-40% by weight of the Al2O3-containing TiO2 pigment, continuing the addition of the silicate solution until the total amount of silicate added is equivalent to 1-25% SiO2, maintaining the resulting mixture with agitation at 40 DEG -70 DEG C. and a pH of 9-11 for about 30 minutes, adjusting the pH of the mixture to 6-6.5 by the addition of acid, maintaining the acidified mixture at 40 DEG -70 DEG C. for at least 20 minutes, recovering the resulting SiO2-coated pigment product by filtering, followed by drying and grinding. The Al2O3-containing TiO2 pigment may be manufactured by co-oxidizing TiCl4 and AlCl3 with air or oxygen at 800 DEG to 1350 DEG C. with the procedure disclosed in Specification 707,560. The Al2O3-containing TiO2 pigment is directly discharged from the oxidation reactor or cooling or calcining equipment of the process and quenched in water. The resulting slurry is adjusted to a pH of 2-6 by the addition of HNO3, HCl, H2SO4 or H3PO4 and maintained at 40 DEG -70 DEG C. prior to mixing with the solution of a water-soluble silicate. |
