titleOfInvention Process for the production of ª‰-carotene
abstract In a process for producing b -carotene by culturing aerobically the + and - forms of Blakeslea trispora in a nutrient medium, there is added to the medium, as an activator, (a) a hydrazide of formula Het-CO-NHNH2 where Het is a mono- or di-nuclear unsaturated heterocyclic radical, other than 4-pyridyl, in which each ring has 5 or 6 atoms and the hetero atoms are oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen, or (b) a pyridine of formula <FORM:1114666/C2/1> where R is an alkanoyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, benzoyl, an alkanoyl or benzoyl radical in which the oxo group is replaced by a condensation or addition product thereof, hydroxyl, hydroxyalkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, carbamoyl N-alkyl or N,N-dialkyl-carbamoyl, thiocarbamoyl or N-alkyl or N,N-dialkyl-thiocarbamoyl, or (c) pyridazine. The nutrient medium may contain from 0.1 to 10 grams per litre of the activator. In examples, b -carotene is obtained by culturing + and - forms of Blakeslea trispora using as the activators 2-furoylhydrazine, 3 - pyrazolyl - carbonyl - hydrazine, 2 - methyl - 2 - pyrimidyl - carbonyl - hydrazine, 2 - indolyl - carbonyl - hydrazine, 2 - pyrazinyl - carbonyl - hydrazine, 4 - thiazolyl - carbonyl - hydrazine, 4 - formyl - pyridine, 4 - hydroxy - pyridine, 4 - thiocarbamoyl - pyridine, 4 - hydroxymethyl - pyridine, 4 - benzoyl - pyridine, 4 - acetyl - pyridine, thiosemicarbazone of 4 - formyl-pyridine and pyridazine; the aqueous culture media contain distillers solubles, starch, soya oil, cotton oil, yeast extract, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, manganese sulphate, thiamine hydrochloride, 2,2,4 - trimethyl - 6 - ethoxy - 1,2 - dihydro - quinoline and 2,6,6 - trimethyl - 1 - acetyl - cyclohexene; b - ionone is added to some of the media.
