titleOfInvention The manufacture of 10ª‡-steroids
abstract The invention comprises a 10a -steroid having the general formula <FORM:1113184/C2/1> wherein R represents a free, esterified or etherified hydroxy group or the acetyl group or a hydroxy-acetyl group which may be esterified or etherified at the hydroxy group and R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group or (where R represents the acetyl gtoup or a hydroxy-acetyl group) a free, esterified or etherified hydroxy group or R and R1 together represent an oxo group and Z represents either an oxo group or a free or esterified hydroxy group having the a - or b -configuration and a hydrogen atom, or a corresponding steroid in which the 3-, 17-and/or 20-keto groups as well as the 17- and 21-hydroxy groups are present in protected form and a process for the manufacture of 11-(oxo or hydroxy or acyloxy)-10a -steroids, which process comprises rearranging an 11-oxo-9b , 10a -steroid containing the partial formula <FORM:1113184/C2/2> by treatment with an acid or base, reducing the 11-oxo group in the rearrangement product to an 11a -hydroxy or 11b -hydroxy group if desired, and also if desired, acylating said 11-hydroxy group in the reduction product. The 3-, 17- and/or 20-keto groups and 17- and/or 20-hydroxy groups are protected during the reaction if necessary which may be effected with mineral acids, sulphonic acids, formic acid, alkali metal hydroxides, organic bases and benzyl ammonium hydroxides. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic or gestagenic activities containing the above compounds are administered enterally, percutaneously or parenterally.
