titleOfInvention | Cellulose ester coating compositions |
abstract | A composition for use in coating comprises as film-forming component; (a) at least 3% by wt. of a fatty acid ester of cellulose containing fatty acid radicals of 2-4 C atoms; (b) 10-50 parts by wt. of a melamine-formaldehyde resin and, (c) 20-60 parts by wt. of an alkyd resin or an acrylic resin. The specified cellulose is cellulose acetate butyrate, which has a butyryl content of 45-56%, an acetyl content of up to 5%, a hydroxyl content of 0.05-5.0% and an intrinsic viscosity range from 0.2-1.0. The melamine-formaldehyde resin may be butylated or hexamethoxymethylated. Alkyd resins used may be oil-free or oil-modified. Optional additives include pigments, e.g. TiO2 or aluminium powder; or organic dyes or solvents.ALSO:An article, e.g. a car body, is coated with a composition comprising (a) at least 3% by wt. of a 2-4 C atom fatty acid ester of cellulose, (b) 10-50 pts. by wt. of a melamineformaldehyde resin and (c) 20-60 pts. by wt. of an alkyd resin or acrylic resin. The dried coating may be sanded down smooth, and then baked to melt it such that the sanding marks disappear, and the final coating has a very high gloss. |
