titleOfInvention Anthelmintic compositions comprising certain organo-phosphates and benzimidazole deriatives
abstract Metal complexes of 2-substituted benzimidazoles of the formula <FORM:1111192/C2/1> wherein R is thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, thiadiazolyl, pyrryl, furyl, halofuryl, thienyl, naphthyl, halonaphthyl, pyrazinyl, pyridyl, coumarinyl, thiacoumarinyl, phenyl or halophenyl, R1 is hydrogen, and each of R2 and R3 is hydrogen, C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 5 alkoxy, halogen, phenyl halophenyl, phenoxy, thienyl or trifluoromethyl are prepared by reacting the 2-substituted benzimidazole, preferably as the acid addition salt, with a metal salt, e.g. a salt of Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, Mn, Ag, Cd, Mo, W, or Sn. 2-Substituted benzimidazoles of the above formula wherein R1 is hydroxy may be prepared by reducing an o-nitro-anilide of the formula <FORM:1111192/C2/2> wherein R, R2 and R3 are as previously defined. 2-Substituted benzimidazoles of the above formula in which R1 is alkoxy may be prepared by alkylating the 2-substituted benzimidazoles in which R1 is hydroxy. The 2-substituted benzimidazoles, their acid addition salts, and their metal complexes have anthelmintic activity.ALSO:A method for treating helminthiasis in animals comprises administering to an animal an effective amount of a 2-substituted benzimidazole of the formula <FORM:1111192/A5-A6/1> where R is thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, pyrryl, furyl, halofuryl, thienyl, naphthyl, halonaphthyl, pyrazinyl, pyridyl, coumarinyl, thiacoumarinyl, phenyl, or halophenyl. R1 is H, hydroxy, alkoxy, C1-5 alkyl, C2-5 alkenyl, alkanoyl, or aroyl, and each of R2 and R3 is H, C1-5 alkyl, C1-5 alkoxy, halogen, phenyl, halophenyl, phenoxy, thienyl, or trifluoromethyl, or an acid addition salt thereof, or a metal complex of such a benzimidazole in which R1 is H, and an effective amount of an organo-phosphate of the formula <FORM:1111192/A5-A6/2> wherein X is O or S, Y is -OR4 or -NHR4, R4 being alkyl or haloalkyl, A is a homocyclic or heterocyclic residue such as phenyl, coumarinyl, or naphthaloximido, and each of R5, R6 and R7 is H, halogen or alkyl, and n is 0 or 1, being 0 when A is coumarinyl, the administering taking place within such period of time as will allow a beneficial interaction between the benzimidazole and the organo-phosphate on the animal. Preferably, the 2-substituted benzimidazole and organo-phosphate are administered simultaneously together in a single composition, altogether they may be administered separately each in its own formulation.
