titleOfInvention | Shaft furnace for the burning of graphite |
abstract | 1,111,164. Shaft furnaces. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 31 March, 1966 [6 April, 1965], No. 14367/66. Heading F4B. A shaft furnace for recovering plutonium and uranium from graphite crucibles comprises a shaft 1 supplied with heated air from a heater 7 through a pipe 6 and with crushed crucible material from a hopper 4 controlled by a flap 5, and a chamber. 2 containing a mass 3 of inert material, e.g. an alumina refractory, into which the shaft 1 dips. Chamber 2 is closed by a plate 15 carrying an offtake 18 and welded to shaft 1, said plate having disposed below it an annular deflector 19. The heater can be bypassed by a pipe 9 and pipe 10 may supply a diluent gas, e.g. nitrogen. The layer of crushed graphite on top of mass 3 is ignited, either through a small layer of wood charcoal 20 or by an electric resistance, combustion being controlled to a maximum of 750‹ C. Plutonium or uranium oxide particles collecting in the mass 3 are eventually dissolved by hot nitric acid to which hydrofluoric acid or aluminium nitrate may be added. The temperature may be controlled by thermocouples in the top layers of mass 3 and controlling the supply of hot or cold air or the nitrogen. |
