titleOfInvention Modified olefin homopolymers and copolymers
abstract Polymers having enhanced dye affinity are prepared by treating olefin homopolymers or copolymers having a terminal copolymer segment derived from an amine group containing monomer with an organic sulphonic acid or a sultone of a hydroxy organic sulphonic acid. The polymer may be a propylene homopolymer or ethylene/propylene random or block copolymer provided with a terminal segment derived from 2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinylpyridine, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, dimethylaminoethyl vinyl ether, tetrahydrofurfurylamine, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. Treatment may be effected with polymer in powder, particle or filament form, and with the sulphonic acid or sultone in solution in a ketone solvent. Examples describe the preparation of (1) a tetrahydrofurfurylamine block terminate polypropylene, (2) a 4-vinylpyridine block terminated ethylene/propylene random copolymer and (3) a 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine block terminate ethylene/propylene block copolymer, and the treatment thereof with 3-hydroxy-1-propane sulphonic acid sultone.ALSO:Articles such as films, fibres and filaments made of modified polymers prepared by treating olefin homopolymers or copolymers having a terminal segment attached thereto which is derived from one or more monomers containing at least one amino group, with a hydroxy alkane sulphonic acid sultone or an alkane sulphonic acid, particularly 3-hydroxy-1-propane sulphonic acid sultone, are dyed with acid or basic dyes. The polymer may be polypropylene or an ethylene/propylene random or block copolymer with a terminal segment derived from 2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinyl-pyridine, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, dimethylaminoethyl vinyl ether, tetrahydrofurfurylamine, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. Examples describe the dyeing with basic green and acid blue dyes in aqueous dyebaths, of films and fibres made from (1) polypropylene with a terminal segment derived from tetrahydrofurfurylamine, (2) an ethylene/propylene random copolymer with a terminal segment derived from 4-vinylpyridine, and (3) a polyethylene/polypropylene block copolymer with a terminal segment derived from 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, all treated with 3-hydroxy-1-propane sulphonic acid sultone.
