titleOfInvention Preparation of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons suitable for biodegradable detergent manufacture
abstract Detergent alkylate is obtained by cracking a petroleum fraction boiling within the range 300-600 DEG C. to yield long chain olefins, separating a fraction in the C8-C15 range, treating with urea in the presence of a solvent to adduct n-olefins, decomposing the adduct in an aromatic hydrocarbon and subjecting the olefin-aromatic mixture to alkylation in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The feed is cracked at 550-650 DEG C. and 1-5 atmospheres in the presence of steam in a hydrocarbon to steam weight ratio of 8-12:1 and a space velocity of 10-70 kg. of total feed/litre of reactor space/hour. The amount of urea used is 3.5-5 parts per part by weight of adductable hydrocarbon together with 0.5-1.2 parts of solvent, e.g. methanol, per part of urea at 0-35 DEG C. The adduct is decomposed by heating in benzene to 50-80 DEG C. to give an aromatic olefin mol ratio of 4-8:1. The alkylation catalyst may be AlCl3 . HCl, BF3 . HF or HF.
