titleOfInvention Polymeric composition and process of preparation
abstract Compositions comprise a polyolefin, 10 to 60 volume per cent of the composition of an inorganic filler having an average surface area of 0.5 to 10 square metres/gram and a 1/d ratio of 10 to 1 or less and an organo silane Xa(Yb)Si-(RnZ)c, where X is a hydrolysable group capable of reacting with a hydroxyl group, Y is a monovalent hydrocarbon group, R is a C1- 20 alkylene group, Z is a group capable of reacting with a free radical, n is 0 or 1, a is 1, 2 or 3, b is 0, 1 or 2, c is 1, 2 or 3, and a+b+c is 4. The filler and silane may be heated at 200 DEG C. in the absence of a solvent to adhere the silane to the filler, and the silane treated filler blended with the polyolefin under conditions producing free radicals, e.g. high shear milling, extrusion or peroxidizing the treated filler. The polyolefin may be a homopolymer of ethylene or propylene, or a copolymer thereof with butenes, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, maleic anhydride or fumaric acid; or mechanical or polymerization blends thereof with other compatible polymers. Many suitable fillers and silanes are specified and examples describe the preparation of moulding materials from (1, 2 and 9 to 11) polyethylene, silica and 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate; (3 and 4) polyethylene, silica and 3-trimethoxypropylamine; (5) polyethylene, silica and vinyltriethoxysilane; silica, 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate and (6) polyethylene and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (7) polyethylene and ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer and (8) polypropylene; and (12) an ethylene/propylene copolymer, feldspar and 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate.
