titleOfInvention Phosphorus-containing isocyanates and process of preparation thereof
abstract Phosphorus-containing polyisocyanates of the general formula <FORM:1110917/C3/1> where n is 0, 1 or 2, R1 and R2 represent hydrogen or methyl, when n is 0 and hydrogen when n is 1 or 2, are reacted with hydroxy compounds, e.g. polyethers or polyesters, to form polyols which may be used in the formation of polyurethanes. In examples, 2 - isocyanato - 1,3,2 - dioxaphospholane and 2 - isocyanato - 4 - methyl - 1,3,2 - dioxaphospholane respectively are reacted with a polyether to form polyols which are reacted with tolylene diisocyanate in the presence of trichloromonofluoromethane, dibutyl tin dilaurate and a silicone oil to form rigid polyurethane foams. The compounds may also be used to impart fire-resistance to high molecular weight compounds, e.g. polyester resins, polyurethane resins and rubbers, alkyd resin coating materials and polyureas derived from polyamines.ALSO:Novel phosphorus-containing cyclic monoisocyanates of the general formula <FORM:1110917/C2/1> where n is 0, 1 or 2, R1 and R2 represent hydrogen or methyl when n is 0, and hydrogen when n is 1 or 2, are prepared by reacting phosphorus trichloride with an appropriate glycol to form a cyclic phosphorus chloride and reacting this with a cyanate at a temperature of at least 60 DEG C. The glycols are selected from ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, 2,3-butylene glycol and 1,4-butylene glycol, and specified cyanates are sodium cyanate, potassium cyanate, ammonium cyanate, silver cyanate and lead cyanate. Both steps of the reaction are preferably carried out in an inert solvent medium. The compounds have flameretarding properties and may be used in the preparation of polyurethanes or for flameproofing various polymeric compounds.
