titleOfInvention Esterification of aromatic dicarboxylic acids
abstract Diesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids are prepared in a process comprising preparing a feed vapour mixture by adding the acid to a carrier stream of an alcohol in vapour form, heating the resulting stream to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the solid acid, filtering the stream to remove solid matter therefrom, and contacting the filtered stream with a particulate solid esterification catalyst for 0.1-25 seconds at a temperature high enough to maintain the acid, alcohol and diester in the vapour phase but below the temperature at which substantial decomposition of the acid, alcohol or diester is effected. Suitable temperatures 315-405 DEG C. Catalysts mentioned are alumina, natural and synthetic silica-aluminas, silica gel, kaolin, bauxite, Attapulgus clay, vanadium pentoxide, chromium oxide, copper oxide and phosphorus pentoxide. The preparation of dimethyl terephthalate is described.
