abstract Novel 1,a ,a -trimethyl-2-piperidylcarbinol diphenyl acetate <FORM:1110637/C2/1> (and acid addition salts thereof) is prepared by hydrogenating a ,a -dimethyl-2-pyridyl-carbinol to the corresponding piperidylcarbinol, treating this compound with formaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to give 1,a ,a -trimethyl-2-piperidylcarbinol which is esterified with diphenyl-acetyl chloride. Pharmaceutical compositions contain the above diphenyl acetate, or salts thereof, as the active ingredient in association with a diluent. The compositions may be administered subcutaneously or intravenously and are capable of blocking the transmission of the nervous centripetal impulses in nerve fibres.
