titleOfInvention | Polyamide reinforced tires |
abstract | In order to reduce flatspotting in a pneumatic tyre of elastomeric material reinforced with polyamide fibres (as described, incorporated as carcass cords). The fibres have a moisture content of above 3% by weight of the fibres and a relative compliance differential less than 1.7. The polyamide may be polyhexamethylene or polycaproamide. The moisture content may be imparted by soaking in water or by mechanical injection of moisture into the tyre, but preferably three nylon 66 yarns each of 140 strands, total denier of 840 and RCD of 0.71 are twisted into cord, dipped in a resorcinol-formaldehyde rubber latex and dried by passing through two drying zones at 300 DEG F and 400-500 DEG F and with a dwell time of 60 seconds and 20-60 seconds respectively. The cord is stretched 4% in the first and 9% in the second zone. The cord is then made up into parallel and carcass ply fabric and incorporated into a tyre which is moulded, cured and allowed to cool before treating the rubber of the tyre can be natural, synthetic e.g. butyl, chloroprene, thiskols, buna, and styrenebutadiene rubber, and may contain additives, e.g. carbon black. The tyre with saturated steam in a closed chamber for 16 hours at 25 p.s.i.g. It is stated that the fibres do not tend noticeably to dry out after treatment. |
