titleOfInvention Insoluble films based on polyvinyl alcohol and process for the preparation thereof
abstract An aqueous film-forming composition contains as the three film-forming ingredients (a) polyvinyl alcohol, (b) starch or dextrin, and (c) a water-soluble polymerizable reaction product of formaldehyde with urea, an amine or a phenol, together with a plasticizer and a polymerization catalyst for the reaction product, e.g. ammonium chloride, sulphate or nitrate. The composition may also contain sodium or potassium tetraborate and the plasticizer may be a glycol, polyethylene or polypropylene glycol, sorbitol, xylitol or glycerol. A dye, emulsifier or gelling agent may also be present. In Example 1, a film is prepared by dissolving potato dextrin and sodium tetraborate in water brought up to 80 DEG C. under vacuum and adding successively this solution and glycerol to a solution of high molecular weight completely hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol at 90-95 DEG C. Aqueous dimethylolurea and ammonium chloride are added, agitation and a temperature of 90 DEG C. are maintained for one hour, and the mass is cast into a film. Examples 3 and 4 are similar, while Example 5 uses polyvinyl alcohol of medium molecular weight and Example 6 varying quantities of sodium tetraborate.
