titleOfInvention | Improvements in the treatment of knitted fabrics |
abstract | A chafer fabric for use in the construction of tyres is produced by subjecting the whole of a tubular knit fabric to a tackifying operation which may comprise laminating green rubber to the fabric or dipping the fabric in a compatible tackifying coating composition which adheres both to the fabric and to green rubber and provides a permanent bond between the fabric and green rubber in the ultimate tyre after vulcanisation, and then cutting the fabric to form a chafer strip. The fabric may be bias cut or cut parallel to the courses. The tackifying bath may comprise natural latex, ammonium caseinate, potassium hydroxide, zinc oxide, a rubber antioxidant and carbon black or smoked sheet rubber dissolved in organic solvents, e.g. benzol or naphtha or mixtures thereof. The fabric may also be subjected to a wick-proofing treatment with a bath containing a vinyl pyridine/butadiene/styrene terpolymer, a dispersion or solution of an acid catalyzed resorcinol formaldehyde and a butadiene vinyl-pyridine copolymer or a solution or dispersion of resorcinol formaldehyde and neoprene or a bromine containing iso olefine-polyolefin interpolymer. The treated fabric may subsequently be laminated with rubber or other elastomers preferably within a period of 1-20 days after the tackifying operation. Fabrics containing viscose rayon, nylon, polyester, polyolefin or cotton fibres may be treated. |
