abstract Tetracycline is produced by cultivating a strain of Streptomyces known to coproduce tetracycline and chlortetracycline, in a conventional manner in a nutrient medium containing benzyl thiocyanate and one or more organic inhibitors of chlorination of the tetracycline molecule. Specified inhibitors are 3-mercapto-5 - hydroxy - 6 - methyl - 1,2,4 - triazine, 3-mercapto - 5 - hydroxy - 6 - benzyl - 1,2,4-triazine, 2 - mercaptobenzthiazole, 5 - vinylthio-oxazolidone and the natural inhibitors of Specification 1,106,628.
