titleOfInvention New polyesters
abstract Polyesters are made by reacting (a) adipic acid or an alkyl ester thereof with (b) a mixture of glycols comprising 10 to 50 mol per cent 1:6-hexanediol and 10 to 90 mol per cent 1,2-propylene glycol or 1,3-butylene glycol or a mixture thereof. The reaction mixture may also contain (c) a monocarboxylic acid, e.g. caproic, lauric, stearic, palm kernel or coconut acids and/or (d) a monohydric alcohol, e.g. n-hexanol, 2-ethylhexanol, n-decanol, n-dodecanol or various alcohols obtained by the carboxylation of olefins. Up to 17.5 mol per cent of the adipic acid may be replaced by other dicarboxylic acids, e.g. succinic, glutaric, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, 3-methyladipic, 2:4-diethyladipic, 2-ethylsuberic, phthalic, isophthalic or 4:41-diphenyldicarboxylic acid. Similarly up to 17.5 mol per cent of the glycols (b) may be replaced by other glycols, e.g. ethylene-, 1:2-butylene-, 2:3-butylene-, 1:4-butylene-, 1:5-pentylene-, neopentylene-, 1,10-decylene-, diethylene- or dipropylene glycols. The polyesters are primarily used for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, unsym. dichloroethylene, styrene and esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric and maleic acids. They may also be used for plasticizing chlorobutadiene and butadieneacrylonitrile polymers, chlorinated vinyl chloride polymers, chlorinated rubber, nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose and cellulose acetate. The plasticized polyvinyl chloride composition may also contain a liquid barium-cadmium complex as a heat stabilizer or a polyisocyanate to assist in good adhesion of the composition to a substrate.
