titleOfInvention Polymerisation process
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1105565/C4-C5/1> <FORM:1105565/C4-C5/2> where R and R1 are the same or different and are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or cycloalkyl groups or hydrogen atoms, n is an integer of at least 5 and preferably at most 18, and m is an integer, which are prepared by polymerizing a cycloolefin of formula <FORM:1105565/C4-C5/3> in the presence of an olefin disproportionation catalyst. Suitable catalysts are rhenium heptoxide supported on alumina; molybdenum oxide/alumina, preferably also containing cobalt oxide and minor amounts of alkali or alkaline earth metal ions; molybdenum or tungsten carbonyls supported on alumina, silica or silica/alumina; and tungsten oxides supported on alumina. Production of dimers is favoured by refluxing the monomer in a Soxhlet-type apparatus, the catalyst being contained in the thimble; and production of higher polymers is favoured by refluxing the monomer in the presence of the catalyst. Examples describe the formation of hexamers of cyclooctene and cyclododecene; the dimer of cyclooctene, i.e. cyclohexadecadiene; and the hydrogenation of the latter over a PtO2 catalyst to form cyclohexadecane.
