titleOfInvention N,n-diacylanilides and herbicidal compositions containing the same
abstract The invention relates to compounds of the general formula <FORM:1104413/C2/1> wherein X is a halogen atom, n is an integer from 1 to 5, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and A is a phenyl or alkylphenyl group. Compounds claimed per se are: 31,41 - Dichloro - N - formylpropionalide, 31,41 - Dichloro - N - formyl - 2 - methylvaleranilide, 31,41 - Dichloro - N - formylvaleranilide, 31,41 - Dichloro - N - formyl - 2 - methylpropionanilide, 21,41,51 - Trichloro - N - formylpropionanilide 31 - Chloro - 41 - methyl - N - formylpropionanilide, 31,51 - Dichloro - N - formyl propionanilide. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a compound (imidate) of the general formula <FORM:1104413/C2/2> in which R11 is alkyl (this starting material being prepared by reacting the corresponding aniline with ethyl ortho propionate or the corresponding formidate) with a compound of the formula RCOX1 where X1 is a halogen atom, and heating the reactants to a temperature at least sufficient to split-off alkyl halide.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise as active ingredients a compound of the general formula: <FORM:1104413/A5-A6/1> X is halogen, n is an integer from 1 to 5, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and R\sv is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, together with a solid or liquid diluent. There may also be incorporated surface active agents, fertilisers, e.g. ammonium nitrate, urea and superphosphate, compost, manure, humus. Many diluents are specified.
