titleOfInvention New polymers
abstract A terpolymer comprises at least one polysiloxane block, linked to at least one polyoxyalkylene block and, attached to a polyoxyalkylene block, at least one polyvinyl ester or partially or wholly hydrolysed polyvinyl ester block. The vinyl ester, e.g. vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate or caprate, is grafted, using a free radical catalyst, on to a polyoxyalkylene of general formula (OCnH2n)x where X is an integer and n is from 1 to 5. The polyoxyalkylene is prepared conventionally and one or both ends of the block are attached to a polysiloxane block prior or subsequent to the grafting of the vinyl ester. The polyvinyl ester block of the terpolymer may be subjected to hydrolysis or alcoholysis to yield a polyvinyl alcohol block. The vinyl esters used in the examples are vinyl acetate, vinyl n-butyrate and a vinyl acetate-vinyl caprate mixture. They are grafted on to (1) a polyether prepared by oxyalkylation of n-butanol with a 50:50 ethylene and propylene oxide mixture, (2) as (1) the alcohol being iso-octanol, (3) a polyethylene glycol, (4) and (9) a mixture of polyethers (1) and (2), (5) and (6) polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene copolymers, (20) a polyether prepared from iso-octanol, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, (23) a polyethylene oxidepolypropylene oxide block copolymer and (25) a mixed oxyalkylene polymer. The graft polymers produced are reacted, in (1), (2), (9) and (23), with a trimethylsilyl end-stopped polysiloxane fluid, in (3) with 1-hydro-undecamethylpentasiloxane, in (4) with a Si-H terminated dimethylpolysiloxane, in (20) with an ethoxypolysiloxane, in (22) with a chlorosubstituted polysiloxane and in (24) and (25) with an organopolysiloxane oil. The graft polymers of Examples 6, 9 and 12 are hydrolysed using NaOMe/MeOH and those of Examples 1, 2, 4 to 6, 9 and 20 are used as surfactants or cell control agents in the production of polyurethane foams in Examples 14 to 19 and 21. The foams are formed from reactants comprising (A) a propylene oxide-glycerol adduct, the 2,4- and 2,6-isomers of tolylene diisocyanate, stannous octoate, water and triethylene diamine, or a mixture of N,N-dimethyl-benzylamine and 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-pyridine or (B) oxypropylated trimethylolpropane, 4,41-diisocyanato-diphenyl methane, trichloromonofluoromethane, tri-(beta-chloroethyl) phosphate, dibutyltin dilaurate and N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine.
