titleOfInvention Coating composition and paper product
abstract A paper-coating composition comprises an aqueous dispersion or emulsion containing, on a dry solids basis, from 15 to 75% by weight of a non-oxidized polyethylene, from 15 to 55% of an elastomeric polymer in the form of a butadiene-styrene copolymer or an acrylic polymer, and a tackifying resin. The elastomeric component may contain 0.5 to 7% of an unsaturated carboxylic acid e.g. (meth)acrylic acid or itaconic acid. Specified acrylic polymers are those of ethyl (meth)acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and propyl acrylate. The tackifier is e.g. a glycerol ester of polymerized rosin (a), dammar gum, hydrogenated rosin, manila gum or a coumarone-indene resin. In the examples polyethylene emulsions are mixed with (1) a carboxy-styrene-butadiene copolymer emulsion and tackifier (a); (2) to (5) a butadiene-styrene copolymer and tackifier (a); and (6) a styrene-butadiene-itaconic acid copolymer latex and tackifier (a). The coatings are applied to kraft paper boards (see Division B2).ALSO:A heat sealable coated paper comprises a paper substrate and a coating containing 15 to 75% by weight, on a dry solids basis, of a non-oxidised polyethylene, 15 to 55% of an elastomeric styrene-butadiene copolymer or acrylic polymer and a tackifying resin. In the examples, bleached kraft paper board stock is coated with compositions containing a polyethylene emulsion, glycerol esters of polymerised rosin and a carboxy-butadiene-styrene copolymer emulsion, a butadiene-styrene copolymer or a styrene-butadiene-itaconic acid copolymer latex.
