titleOfInvention | Solid phase polymerization of polyesters |
abstract | In a process for the solid phase polymerization of a polyester of a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol, the solid polyester is treated with ethylene glycol prior to the solid phase polymerization. The treatment may comprise (a) soaking particles of the polyester for five days in ethylene glycol and then washing with acetone, crystallization of the polyester (by heating it to 140 DEG C.) being effected before or after the soaking or (b) injecting ethylene glycol into a bed of polyester particles being heated under solid phase polymerization conditions or (c) contacting the polyester with ethylene glycol vapour. The polymerization may be effected by first heating the polyester particles in a current of nitrogen to remove excess glycol and thereafter heating under vacuum, the temperature preferably being in the range of from about 10 DEG C. above the sticking temperature of the polyester to about 20 DEG C. below the melting temperature of the polyester. Specified polyesters are polyethylene terephthalate and its copolymers with neopentylene glycol, 2:2-bis-[4-(beta-hydroxyethoxyphenyl)propane], adipic acid, sebacic acid, isophthalic acid and 2:6-naphthalic acid; also polyesters of terephthalic acid and tetramethylene glycol or 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol; also polyesters of ethylene glycol and bibenzoic acid or 2:6-naphthalic acid; also tetramethylene terephthalate - tetramethylene isophthalate copolyesters. |
