titleOfInvention | Organo magnesium compounds for alkadiene polymerization |
abstract | Polymers of conjugated alkadienes are made by polymerizing at least one alkadiene in the presence of a catalyst of (1) a salt of Ti or V, and (2) an organomagnesium complex of the formula RaMgXb, where b/a is between zero and one, R is selected from alkyl (including cycloalkyl), aryl, and aralkyl radicals, and X is a halogen selected from chlorine, bromine and iodine. The Specification contains a list, of dienes of which 1,3-pentadiene, butadiene, and isoprene, and mixtures of the last two dienes are exemplified. The polymerization is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent, but it may be effected in bulk. The catalyst may be "preformed," or formed "in situ." The product of Example XVII is stated to be a stereo block polymer of 1,3-butadiene in which the blocks are cis-1,4 and trans-1,4 structural units.ALSO:Organo-magnesium complexes of the formula RaMgXb, where b/a is between zero and one, R is an alkyl (including cycloalkyl), aryl, or aralkyl radical, and X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine are made by mixing powdered magnesium, a phenyl halide or alkyl halide, aluminium isopropoxide, and optionally an aromatic hydrocarbon, heating the mix under reflux for several hours, adding diluent, centrifuging, and decanting the clear supernatant liquid containing the desired organometallic complex. Four examples are given of preparations. |
