titleOfInvention Improvements in the treatment of wool
abstract Wool is shrink proofed and scoured by contacting it with an aqueous solution or suspension of at least one of the chlorocyanuric compounds comprising dichlorocyanuric acid, trichlorocyanuric acid and salts thereof together with a non- ionic wetting agent. The wool may be in the form of raw wool, partially scoured wool, tops, yarn or fabric. The non-ionic wetting agent may be a condensation product of a long chain fatty acid, e.g. lauric, oleic or stearic acid, a long chain fatty alcohol, e.g. lauryl, oleyl or stearyl alcohol, or a phenol, e.g. phenol, naphthol, isobutyl phenol or amyl phenol, with an alkylene glycol, polyalklene glycol, glycerol, glyceride, sorbitol, mannitol or pentaerythritol, or an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block polymer. The chlorocyanuric compound may be used in an amount of 1-10% by weight of the wool and the wetting agent in an amount of 1-6% by weight of the wool. The amount of water present in the treating bath may be 20-40 times the weight of the wool and the treatment may be carried out at 60 DEG -80 DEG F at a pH of 6-7, the pH thereafter being reduced to 4-4.5 by the addition of acetic or formic acid while maintaining a temperature of 60 DEG -80 DEG F to effect rapid exhaustion of the chlorine on the wool. Any residual chlorine may be removed from the wool after the treatment by treatment with an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite followed by rinsing with water. The chlorocyanuric compound may be used in the form of a mixture comprising trichlorocyanuric acid, cyanuric acid and an alkali metal carbonate. The treating solution may also contain Glaubers salt and soda ash.
